How do you use Illuminate with your students? What are one or two instructional strategies you employ?
I use the “Create an Item” to make my own NGSS* science questions. I model the format after the CAASPP Science Test that my fifth graders will be taking for the first time this year. I include many graphs, photos, and diagrams for students to analyze during the multiple choice sections. I also include an article about our topic, and I ask students to complete an ELA-style Performance Task using the article.
What challenge does Illuminate help you or your students solve?
Illuminate helps me to prepare my students for the CAASPP Science that they take for the first time in fifth grade. It also lets me assess student learning at the end of the unit.
What advice do you have for someone who is just starting to use Illuminate?
I started out with assessments by using the Itembank because it’s a more streamlined process than “Create an Item.” I would suggest that teachers get comfortable using that or the Flex Assessments before launching fully into creating their own tests. After time, creating items will feel easier.
